The Pulpwood Queen Answers the Cry of the Meadowlark!

Dear Readers,

I will be traveling to my hometown of Eureka, Kansas soon and the Eureka Lake county road was what you drove to get my grandparents home place we called OUTHOME!
In this time of social distancing I choose to travel safely and wisely back to where I grew up because they say you can never go home again, but Eureka calls to me as the meadowlark from the prairies of the Flinthills.
I plan on reading, which just arrived,  my childhood classmates book “The Road to Sugarloaf” by Eric T. Reynolds which is in reference to the highest point of the Flinthills in Greenwood County, Kansas called “Sugarloaf”.  My grandpa use to take us in his old green pickup truck to the very top and drive down the hill as we hung on for dear life on the tailgate for the joyride of our childhood lives.  I plan on taking my FJ Cruiser there to recreate that event, stay tuned.
One of my all time favorite authors, Willie Morris once said, I paraphrase here that you spend the first half of your life trying to get away from the place where you raised but the second half of your life you do everything to get back home. No truer words…
I know truly by all my senses when I am getting close just beyond Tulsa, I see the open prairies, I roll down my windows and can hear the cattle bawl, the fenceposts fly by as I smell, yes, the weeds and native plants. To see that open sky fills all my senses with the wonder of the world and the smallness of my place in it!

I have always had a love for American geography, and especially for the landscapes of the South. One of my pleasures has been to drive across it, with no one in the world knowing where I am, languidly absorbing the thoughts and memories of old moments, of people vanished now from my life.

Willie Morris
Driving knocks out all the cobwebs of my mind to give me a full picture of what a wonderful world we do live in. You do not have to tell me to wear a mask, or do social distancing, I am very aware that we must change the way we approach life in the days ahead.
Will head out to Teter Rock too, check out this video at https://www.facebook.com/Pulpwoodqueen/posts/10213751744922641
So to quote one of my favorite children’s books this are the words I live by.
What You Know First
by Patricia MacLachlan
The dirt that my first cousin Terry Pursell and I dug up at my grandparents old homeplace Outhome, my most cherished possession. The old bottle of dirt reminds me of the place I come from and where some day I want my cremated ashes thrown to the wind, there’s no place like home.
Truly, Tiara Wearing, Book, Film, and Storytelling Sharing,
