Years ago when I was truly just a kid, 19 or 20 years old, I traveled in my first flight ever to Hawaii, the biggest TWA plane flying with two levels and a bar on top, from Kansas City, Kansas to Hawaii. I went with the my dear friend Becky, who owned the beauty salon I worked in in Lawrence, Kansas The Hair Shack and her sister for my first ever grown up vacation. When we arrived it was the first time as we walked out on the the beach to see the ocean. I can still remember everything to this day.
We rented a turquoise VW Thing convertible and traversed all around Waikiki Beach to the Pearl Harbor, the plantation groves, the Wide World of Sports Surfing championships,on to watching the Cliff Divers, to body surfing on the east shore to driving through the rugged terrain back to our hotel. I had the time of my life and relived every “Beach Blanket Bingo”, “Blue Hawaii” drive in movie moments of my childhood. Flash forward to last night…
LIVE from Stephanie Chance’s Decorate Ornate art gallery where I was debuting my new artwork, I stopped to do a Zoom meeting for my Pre-Show of The Pulpwood Queen Film Club. This was all during people roaming in and out for Gladewater, Texas Holiday Open House! Surreal! Because I interviewed the hairdresser that took over Jay Seybring’s empire when Jay Seybring was brutally murdered during the Manson Murders. On to the story of Jim Markham’s involvement as consultant on the Academy Award Winning Film, “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Surreal indeed!
Jay is a consummate professional hair designer and artist, entrepreneur, and innovator that has had Five companies including PureOlogy which he sold to L’oreal for 284 million dollars.
His first client was Paul Newman and cut and styling the stars hair of others, such as, Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, Johnny Carson, Paul Anka, and even Frank Sinatra. Can you just imagine those conversations?
We had some difficulty getting visual for our interview taping but luckily the audio went fine from his home on the big island of Hawaii. I hope you are paying attention to all of this, as as I was talking to Jim I realized just what a wonderful thing is truly is to talk to someone so famous like he was a part of my family. Because you see he is, he is my “book” family. Never in a million, a kazillion years could I ever imagine talking to someone who is truly an inspiration to me as a small town New Mexico boy who went after his big dreams.
You just have to read his book “Big Lucky”, it’s just that good with author, Echo Garrett on that endeavor. So thank you all for joining me on this wonderful reading world of my book club where we armchair travel every day with our reads and have traveled the world with our big “book” and literaey adventures. It surely is all about the story and coming up next the actual audio interview with the wonderful Jim Markham. My hope is this inspires you to read with us and dream big dreams! Life we have found is so so short, and all I know is I am living each day as if it is the most important day of my life. This interview truly made me realize how much I want to read more and travel the world. AND I also believe these “book” connections add such incredible insight into our own lives. We are a community, a tribe of readers and authors and I do not know about all of you? THIS just makes my life worth living!!!!
